In the Limelight : The Tawny Emperor Butterfly of Lotfi Bouslah

Art intrigues the mind that wants to learn, to understand, that wants to open its perspectives. Every artist is an invitation to explore a new world, and each piece of art of each artist is a portal that allows a new experience, an unknown universe and this new knowledge improves how one sees the world, how one sees oneself. Photography as a visual art has a power that is hard to deny, because the camera is able to capture moments of concrete reality and give that reality a very individual interpretation. Nature photographer Lotfi Bouslah of Lolo Pics sees the intimate side of nature. His photos leave an impression that lasts. Designed with patience and a profound respect for the subject of his photographs, Lotfi Bouslah is an artist who speaks to the spirit of things, his photography is transcendental. Whether it is a majestic scene, like a mountain, a sunrise or a sunset, or fauna or flora, the photographer puts himself in the moment with all his senses, and the result are photos that not only are a reflection of nature, but that are an introduction to the spirit of nature itself.
The 28th of September, Lotfi Bouslah shared a photo of a butterfly perched on the stem of a wild flower. It is a butterfly in the big family of Nymphalidae, of which there are more than 6000 species, of which 5 are the most popular : the monarch, the emperor, the admiral, the tortoise shell, and the  fritillary. The photo of Lotfi Bouslah is of an emperor butterfly, specifically the tawny emperor. The Nymphalidae are known as the brush footed butterflies, for the fact that in certain species the males have their front legs bent and bushy, and these two front legs are not used for walking. It is thought that these two bent front legs are used to communicate about their territory, through the vibrations the bushy legs can create through friction. The photo shows these two bent front legs very clearly. What makes this photo unique is the way its creator was able to capture the light in the pose of this insect : the wings look transparent, like stained glass. I have seen hundreds of photos of butterflies, good photographs. It is the first time I see a photograph of a butterfly whose wings are celebrated as a play of magical light. The butterfly is immobile, as were it fascinated by its own beauty, like a ballet dancer, the cavalier in waiting focused on the ballerina. The butterfly seems to communicate it knows it is beautiful, that it likes having its picture taken. It enjoys being in the limelight. The colours in this photograph are magnificent, this is not the cold portrait of a pretty insect, this is the portrait of a vibrating presence that understands its importance, that celebrates its beauty in its yellow - orange golden colours, with the magnificent details of the dark eye spots that underline the line of white light that enhances the jagged design of the edges on the wings. The fact that the tawny emperor has taken its resting pose on the end of a green stem of a wild flower adds to its central position, it is the sole dancer on the scene, the ballerino, the king of the story. The background is in soft focus, in its yellow - golden colours, as if the butterfly was waiting in front of the curtain, on scene, ready to receive a grand " Bravo ! " of its enthusiastic public. This photograph is sublime, because of the magic of its light, because of its perspective, that puts us in the world of the butterfly, who in turn, because of the patience and the respectful spirit on the part of the photographer, succeeds, for one sublime moment, to wake the curiosity on the part of the butterfly for the point of view of the world of humans.
